Basque Language
Language Isolate Basque is the only surviving language isolate in Europe, meaning it has no known relatives among other languages.
Geographic Distribution Spoken in the Basque Country, which spans regions in both Spain and France, including parts of the autonomous community of the Basque Country and the northern area of Navarre in Spain, as well as the Northern Basque Country in France.
Number of Speakers As of 2021, approximately 30.6% of the population aged 16 and above in the Basque-speaking regions were fluent Basque speakers, totaling around 806,000 individuals.
Language Revitalization Recent surveys indicate an increase in Basque speakers, particularly among younger generations. In the Basque Autonomous Community, 74.5% of individuals aged 16–24 are fluent speakers, compared to 22.0% in the 65+ age range.
