Linguistic Classification Hindi is an Indo-Aryan language, part of the larger Indo-European language family.
Number of Speakers As of the 2011 Census, Hindi is the most widely spoken language in India, with 528 million native speakers, accounting for 43.63% of the population. Including second and third language speakers, the total rises to approximately 692 million, or 57.1% of the population.
Global Presence Hindi-speaking communities exist worldwide, notably in countries like Nepal, Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, South Africa, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, due to historical migration and diaspora.
Official Status Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, is one of the two official languages of the Government of India, alongside English.
