Amharic Language
Official Language Amharic is the official working language of Ethiopia and one of the country's five official languages.
Number of Speakers As of 2018, Amharic had approximately 32 million native speakers and over 25 million second-language speakers in Ethiopia.
Writing System The language uses the Ge'ez script, an abugida with 34 basic characters, each having seven forms to denote different vowel sounds, totaling around 280 symbols.
Linguistic Classification Amharic belongs to the South Ethio-Semitic group of the Afro-Asiatic language family, closely related to Ge'ez, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
