Number of Speakers As of 2018, Amharic had approximately 32 million native speakers and over 25 million second-language speakers in Ethiopia. β
Writing System The language uses the Ge'ez script, an abugida with 34 basic characters, each having seven forms to denote different vowel sounds, totaling around 280 symbols. β
Linguistic Classification Amharic belongs to the South Ethio-Semitic group of the Afro-Asiatic language family, closely related to Ge'ez, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. β
