Azerbaijani Language
Linguistic Classification Azerbaijani, also known as Azeri, is a member of the West Oghuz group of the southwestern (Oghuz) branch of the Turkic languages.
Number of Speakers Estimates suggest that Azerbaijani is spoken by approximately 25 to 35 million people worldwide.
Official Status It is the official language of Azerbaijan, where about 82% of the population speaks Azerbaijani as their first language.
Dialects There are two main varieties: North Azerbaijani, spoken primarily in Azerbaijan, and South Azerbaijani, spoken mainly in Iran.
