Linguistic Classification Māori, or te reo Māori, is an Eastern Polynesian language closely related to Tahitian and Cook Islands Māori.
Number of Speakers Approximately 190,000 people, or 4% of New Zealand's population, could hold an everyday conversation in Māori as of the 2018 census.
Official Status Māori has been an official language of New Zealand since 1987.
Writing System Māori uses the Latin alphabet, introduced by European missionaries in the early 19th century.
